Whether you are in a long-term relationship with a transgender or gender nonbinary (TGNB) person or if your partner came out over the course of your relationship, you may be struggling with:

  • Exploring your own relationship to sexuality and gender
  • Determining how to talk about your partner and your relationship with friends and family
  • Facing questions, you don’t have answers to yet- or feel too private to answer
  • Negotiations about your intimacy and sex life with your partner
  • Feeling powerless in the politicization and transphobia in larger conversations

In addition to your commitment to your relationship, chances are that you have had to take on the additional role of being an ally or advocate. Some examples include:

  • Reinforcing your partners’ name and pronouns in family and social settings
  • Buffering inappropriate questions and curiosities about transgender experiences
  • Engaging in political advocacy to protect your family from discriminatory laws and policies
  • Attending medical appointments to advocate for gender affirming care
  • Navigating legal documentation to help keep your family safer
  • Experiencing discrimination and victimization alongside your partner

These are stressors that can impact your mental health too! Over time, you may start to feel:

  • Anxious
  • Depressed
  • Tensions with your friends or family
  • Impatient
  • Agitated
  • Anger or rage
  • Isolated and alone
