This weekly consultation group will focus on deepening the work between a therapist and a transgender/gender nonbinary (TGNB) adult client. Each meeting is an interactive exploration about a member’s work with a TGNB client. The group is structured to draw the therapist/client dyad into the group through parallel process, emotional enactments, and transference/countertransference dynamics with a special emphasis on gender. This group is guided to be playful, emotionally intimate, interactive, and spontaneous. We hope to create a felt sense of the developmental, psychodynamic, and relational dynamics of psychotherapy with transgender and nonbinary clients. Issues of self-disclosure, projections of the therapist’s internalized shame, loss of clinical objectivity, and self-care will be addressed.
About Dr. Cadyn
Dr. Cadyn has been providing psychotherapy services with transgender and nonbinary patients since 2010 and teaching graduate level psychology courses since 2012. His teaching has ranged from psychodynamic theory to LGBT clinical work to psychopharmacology. In 2018, he founded The Affirmative Couch, which provided online continuing education on working with sexuality and gender. He became passionate about psychoanalytic theory and practice after experiencing the transformation that can happen within an 4-day-a-week psychoanalysis. He utilizes theory, lived experiences, and clinical practice in his consultation to facilitate growth and development for consultees.
Testimonial from Clinicians who have consulted with Dr. Cadyn
Engaging in ongoing consultation with Cadyn has had a profoundly positive impact on the quality and effectiveness of my professional practice. Through our collaborative discussions, I have gained valuable insights and developed a deeper understanding of psychodynamic concepts, turning theory into a framework that has helped guide my case conceptualizations in a way that renewed my work with my clients. Therefore, bringing movement and aliveness into my sessions with my clients and bringing me in full realization to the meaning of psycho-“dynamic”.
Cadyn’s expertise, thoughtful feedback, and his ability to hone in on what is not being talked about has challenged me to reassess my formulations in a productive manner. His guidance has been instrumental in helping me navigate moments of clinical impasse. By supporting me in applying psychodynamic concepts in a clear, focused, and practical way, he has brought a sense of clarity and renewal to situations in which I previously felt stuck. His insight has been invaluable to my practice and to my ongoing growth as a clinician.
