Holding both AAPI as well as queer and trans identities can weigh on us while also being a source of pride. You may have felt that who you are has distanced you from the very people you hold dear—whether that’s family, friends, and significant others. Depending on your familial and social context you may have had to hide parts of you to make others happy. This process group provides a space where you can bring all of the different, authentic parts of yourself into the room and in community with others. Here, you’ll get the chance to laugh, cry, and feel all of the complicated emotions that come with your experience. Together, our group will be a place for all of us to connect with our whole selves.

We will:

  • Make room for all of your intersecting identities
  • Process feelings of shame, anger, and grief we’ve been taught not to express
  • Learn how to navigate relationships with our family, friends, and significant others
  • Explore race, sexuality, and gender in an affirming space
  • Experience ourselves again with others who share our stories

This is a closed process group for AAPI young adults (18-26) who identity as queer and trans. A closed process group means the same people will meet once a week for at least 12 weeks. The group may open up to new members at the end of the 12 week cycle.

What we need from you:

To provide a supportive group experience, the following requirements must be met to join the group. You must be:

  • An AAPI adult between the ages of 18-26 that identifies within the LGBTQIA+ umbrella
  • Living in the state California and over 18 years old
  • Willing to make a weekly commitment for at least 12 weeks from the beginning of the group
  • Able to keep  a strong internet connection in a confidential space
  • Interested in a space where you can build a stronger sense of identity and community in an affirming environment away from negative narratives about who you are and who you should be.

Your Group Therapist

I am a registered AMFT (#150183) specializing in AAPI and LGBTQIA+ mental health. My personal goal is to support people in reigniting their passion to explore and grow in their own authentic ways. I am currently a PhD candidate at Alliant University, Los Angeles researching the existential experiences of transition for transgender people of color.

My experience lies in community mental health where I worked at Korean American Family Services as a therapist. Prior to working in mental health I worked in the tech industry as a project manager where I had to navigate several obstacles related to my different identities. I am also a second generation Korean-American immigrant and identify as a transgender woman of color. I look forward to bringing my experiences and identities into community with yours.

Contact us using the form below. To ensure a good fit and maintain group cohesion, the group leader, Kyung In Lee, will require a brief initial consultation. Please use the consultation as an opportunity to ask questions and communicate your needs as well.
